FAQs
CASA volunteers advocate for the child’s best interests with the goal of the child having a safe, permanent home as soon as possible, preferably through reunification with their biological parent(s) when safe to do so.
A CASA Advocate serves as a(n):
- FACT-FINDER, gathering relevant information and objectively examining the situation, including history, environment, relationships and the needs of the child;
- FACILITATOR, coordinating a collaborative relationship between all parties involved in the case, helping to create a situation in which the child’s needs can be met;
- MONITOR, overseeing the child and their situation throughout the court proceedings, checking compliance with court orders and recommended services; and
- ADVOCATE, ensuring each child’s needs are acted upon in a sensitive and timely manner.

Upon being assigned their first case, CASA Advocates spend an average of 10 hours per month fulfilling their role. Advocates remain actively involved in the case until it is closed by the juvenile court, an average of 2 years. CASA Advocates also complete 12 hours of continuing education annually.
The initial process includes the completion of an online application, an interview, a background check, fingerprinting and reference checks. The pre-service training is about 30 hours and includes in-person class and work to complete individually at home. Upon successful completion of these steps, a volunteer is sworn in with the court and assigned to their first case.
The safety of our Advocates is a top priority for our organization. Our training strengthens your ability to be aware of your surroundings, assess the environment, trust your instincts and communicate concerns with your Advocate Supervisor.
Yes, they are! CASA Advocates are an important part of the juvenile court system. Our goal is for each child involved in the DeKalb County Juvenile Court to have their own CASA Advocate.
