Why I Volunteer
Meet a few of our amazing CASA Advocates!
Pat I.
Pat has served on a case with one child since December 2023. Pat says, “It has been amazing to spend the last year observing a child move through her early infancy to become an individual with a personality that is uniquely her own. I had forgotten how fast that transformation takes place.”
Fun fact about Pat – her last two years of high school were completed at the International School of Bangkok Thailand!
Pat says that “Becoming a CASA volunteer is one of the most powerful ways to serve to my community and help provide children in the legal system with a voice.”
Karen H.
Karen celebrated her 20-year CASA-versary in May 2023! She has served 23 children in DeKalb County so far. One of her most rewarding experiences while volunteering with CASA was when 3 of the children she served were adopted, and another 3 children achieved reunification with their family. For fun, Karen likes to repurpose items into yard ornaments/decorations!
Karen says, “There are too many children in the county that need one person to be there for them. You can be that person.”
Jodi D.
Jodi has been an Advocate since April 2023, serving 2 children so far. Jodi says that her most rewarding experience is, “Being a constant in the lives of the children I serve. I love knowing that I can be someone they can talk to about anything. The relationship I’ve formed with them has been meaningful.”
Fun fact about Jodi – she enjoys biking, hiking and camping, and she sings at her church on a regular basis.
Jodi says that being a CASA Advocate is “…a wonderful way to make an impact in the lives of children in the foster care system & serve your community.”
Scott M.
Scott has been a CASA Advocate since December 2022 and has served 3 children so far. His most rewarding experience as a CASA Advocate has been interacting with and getting to know the children during regularly scheduled home visits. He says, “It’s humbling to know I have an opportunity to make a difference in a child’s life by serving on their behalf and helping them find a safe and loving home.”
Fun fact about Scott – he enjoys volunteering at collegiate and professional golf tournaments during the summers.
Scott encourages others to become a CASA Advocate! He says, “We are all blessed with the gift of giving back and sharing our time and talents with others. There is no better use of one’s time than serving as a CASA Advocate knowing that you can have a positive impact on a child’s life.”
Kevin W.
Kevin has been a CASA Advocate since April of 2024, serving 1 child so far.
Kevin shares that his most rewarding experience thus far has been “Seeing a child who has struggled and not had a home his entire life finally find a family that wants to give him a home and adopt him. What could be better than that.”
Kevin loves food, tools, carpentry, gardening, landscaping and flying his drone! He raises chickens and koi fish and watches his son’s dogs during the day.
Kevin says, “There are many children who through no fault of their own have not had the blessed childhood that many of us have had. We need to help them have a better chance of becoming a happy, productive adult.”
Elizabeth M.
Elizabeth has been an Advocate since May of 2023, serving 1 child so far. Elizabeth says that “making a real connection with youth in care” has been her most rewarding experience. She says, “It can be difficult to gain the trust of a teen, but it is so rewarding to know that I am someone she can confide in and seek help from.”
Fun fact about Elizabeth – she loves hanging out with her pugs, Midge and Mabel, and working on her house with her husband, Chad!
Elizabeth says that “Being a true champion for a child’s best interest makes an immeasurable difference in a child’s life, especially in a time of crisis or upheaval.”
Kathy N.
Kathy has been an Advocate since March of 2023, serving 5 children so far.
When we asked Kathy about her most rewarding experience, she said, “For me it is when you feel you have made a small difference in a child’s life. At times I can feel a connection or shift with the teenagers, those moments are precious. There is nothing greater than giving children our time, glimpses of what tomorrow can look like and encouragement. Volunteers are effective in children’s lives.”
Fun fact about Kathy – she has 3 children and 6 grandchildren. She has also participated in triathlons and loves to walk her German Shepard!
